Research Director

Lead Syntony’s research agenda with the founder, guide fellows and affiliates, and oversee the quality of our research. You will help researchers define useful questions, choose sound methods, and bring their work through review and publication. We are considering both part-time and full-time arrangements.

Responsibilities

  • Set research priorities with the founder and turn them into projects with clear questions, methods, and milestones.
  • Review proposals, study designs, analysis, and draft papers. Check that claims are supported by evidence and that limitations are reported clearly.
  • Guide the Engineering and Humanitas fellowships and Research Affiliates Program, helping researchers define manageable projects and providing regular feedback.
  • Mentor researchers across technical and interdisciplinary work, drawing on specialist reviewers where needed.
  • Coordinate papers, reports, and conference submissions, including review schedules, authorship discussions, and responses to peer review.
  • Work with engineers and the Trusted Red Team to identify research questions from evaluations and testing, and translate findings into improvements to methods and tools.
  • Establish appropriate practices for research ethics, consent, data handling, documentation, and reproducibility.

Qualifications

  • A substantial record of research in AI safety, evaluation, security, governance, or a closely related field, demonstrated through papers, reports, or other research outputs.
  • Experience leading research projects and mentoring researchers, with evidence of helping work reach completion.
  • Strong judgment about research design, evidence, uncertainty, and the limits of different methods.
  • Experience reviewing and editing research for publication or for use by practitioners and decision-makers.
  • Ability to work across disciplines, set realistic priorities, and give specific, constructive feedback.
  • Clear written communication and the ability to explain research decisions to technical and non-technical colleagues.

We assess the quality of your research and your experience guiding others. A PhD is not required. Expertise in one or more of our research areas matters more than covering every topic.

Arrangement and compensation

We are open to part-time and full-time appointments. The number of projects, supervisory responsibilities, and expected availability will be matched to the agreed arrangement.

Compensation, responsibilities, schedule, location requirements, and other terms will be discussed with the selected candidate and agreed in writing before acceptance. Please indicate your preferred arrangement and availability in your application.
